RESISTANCE, CONSISTENCE, PERSISTENCE
All of us have heard the phrase “that which we resist, persists”. We are also familiar with New Year’s resolutions and “spring cleaning” and bathing suit season that we either continue to address with the best of intentions, or we have given up on even pretending that we will follow through and let things happen as they may-- overeating, not sleeping enough, not exercising or forgetting to catch up with those old friends who have been trying to contact us.
Easy solution: take care of things as they come up. More easily said than done, but we do have everything that it takes to be successful with our desires.
First, have you “fallen off the wagon” with your current wishes? What’s stopping you? Is it something you really “intend” to do? What’s your resistance? Write it down as a real intention: Today I will exercise for one half hour (be specific—walk, row, go to class.) For today I will nourish my body with good food. For today I will make the phone calls I have been avoiding. Tonight I will go to bed at a reasonable hour.
Be as consistent as possible. Write an intention for the week, tape it to your mirror, leave a note in your car. Practice, practice, practice being as consistent as possible---we all need reminders to stay “conscious”.
Finally, persist. Forgetting about a commitment, eating too much chocolate, having that extra glass of wine. Forgive yourself and move into the next moment as gracefully as possible. Don’t use one lapse as an excuse to go off on a food bender, stay up too late or shut down your communication with people as a way of, ultimately, punishing yourself. Persist! Practice the art of moving to and accomplishing the constant goal—nourishing and nurturing yourself with food, people and actions that really serve you.
Approaching the end of the first month of the new year, reflect, acknowledge the resistance, go for the consistence and when all else fails, forgive and persist, persist, persist! And, of course, come to The Oaks at Ojai to jumpstart every season!
