RESOLVE TO STOP MAKING RESOLUTIONS!
I know that making New Year Resolutions is popular,
but it is my personal experience and second hand observation that resolutions
don't tend to last past February. What DOES seem to "stick" however, are
purposeful lifestyle changes that can start ANY time of the year and are not
limited by time frames. For example, most "diets" are prefaced by the
words, "I'm going on a diet". When cheating occurs, it's, "I'm going off my
diet". How about instead, "I'm CHANGING my eating habits to improve my health".
We will only make lifestyle changes if we really see the value
in them, so we have to decide WHAT we really want and WHY we really want it.
Resolutions tend to often also be too big, and we set
ourselves up for failure by overshooting. If you know that exercising more is
essential for your wellbeing, than set yourself up for success. Start with a
modest program- for example, walk a half hour a day. Use a strength tool twice a
week. Stretch for 10 minutes. Once those patterns are in place, add on. Keep
a journal to track your progress, and give yourself credit for
change!
Be able to measure change. For example, with food, journal
caloric intake and weigh once a week or so to see how you're doing. Have a piece
of clothing that you can gauge your progress by. Pay attention to your energy
levels and to when your new habits start to feel a little easier!
Calendar "dates" with yourself to work out, like it's just
another health appointment you have to keep. Prioritize that time like you would
if you were paying a health professional. You will take it more seriously if you
see it show up on your calendar, Iphone, or Blackberry!
Tell someone about the changes you want to make. We all need
to be supported, encouraged, and held accountable in our lives. There's a lot to
be said for seeing a counselor, joining a group, going to a health club, hiring
a trainer, or just committing with a friend to get healthy! Don't be ashamed of
needing some assistance with motivation.
Before you make a resolution, sit down with yourself and
decide exactly what it is that needs to change. Maybe you exercise, and eat
well, but stress is killing you. If that's the case, remind yourself that the
world WILL turn without you- put things into perspective! Don't create crises-
learn to choose to be calm, cool, and collected when stressors come. Put
yourself in the enviable position of being a responder, not a
reactor.
Think about things in your life that do not please you- how can you change
SOMETHING about those thoughts, emotions, attitudes, behaviors
so that you can experience something new, and hopefully better?
So, rather than a resolution, make a lasting
change.
You're worth it!
