The “Fast” Track

Sometimes our bodies just need a break from certain foods for a certain length of time, maybe forever, to improve our digestion, elimination, and energy. Fasting from certain foods may also stimulate weight loss! Here’s a no brainer- our bodies change as we age. Foods we used to be able to eat are suddenly less tolerable to our systems, even at times becoming food allergies. If you are feeling stuck, bloated, or lethargic consider fasting from some food groups. I recommend 3 weeks, but if that seems daunting, try a week or two and see how you do! Every little bit will help and you can always try again.

Juice fasting for 2-3 days is a great head start, and gives the body a break from processed, refined, and solid foods. It allows organs to rest while the body still receives the essential nutrients and energy it needs to perform everyday functions. Typical juice fasts include vegetable and wheatgrass juices as well as potassium broth, green and other herbal teas, and water with lemon. You can add fruit if you wish, unless you’re trying to discourage your sweet tooth from activating!

Simplify your solid foods after your juice fast: Eliminate anti-nutrients and the foods you may be sensitive/allergic to: soy, dairy, eggs, corn, peanuts, wheat (gluten), beef, all hydro or trans fats, processed food, white flour, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. Eat brown rice, oats, bran, quinoa, buckwheat noodles, legumes, beans, WASHED fresh raw or lightly blanched veggies, low sugar fruit, free range chicken or turkey, cold water fish, avocados, nuts, seeds (flax for sure) and olive or coconut oil, pureed vegetable soup: (steam veggies, puree & season). Drink 64 or more oz. of water daily!

Take a good pro-biotic or acidophilus to bring healthy bacteria into your system- about 5-10 billion live organisms per dose.  Take a good multi vitamin/mineral supplement and Milk Thistle- 140 mg. 2x daily to heal and protect the liver. Try including a digestive enzyme with meals to release food nutrients!

Keep your bowels moving! Feeling sluggish? Try Magnesium Citrate

Increase circulation  by MOVING! Walk for 30 min. daily, plus strength training every other day for 20-30 minutes. Stretch daily for 10 minutes or more.

Reduce your STRESS!  Breathe, laugh, & RELAX! Consider a TV, pop culture, & computer fast.  Simplify your space- cleaner is better. The less cluttered you are, mentally & environmentally, the better you will feel!Get a massage weekly.  Plus- steam, sauna, or bathe in fresh orange and lemon slices, plus three drops of peppermint essential oil. Scrub the skin clean gently with 1/2 cup avocado oil with 1/2 cup Kosher salt and 2 drops of  essential oil.

Drink Ginger Tea: Place a 1 inch piece of fresh ginger in freshly boiled water and steep for five minutes. Boosts metabolism and reduce water retention.

If you can hang on for 3 weeks, DO! If you can’t, do it for as long as you’re able. Bring omitted foods back one at a time and journal how you feel- try to identify what foods may not be the best for you long term.
